Late last week, FERVO Energy took a blowout at Cape Station, their flagship enhanced-geothermal project in Utah.

Please let me offer my sincere congratulations to the FERVO team for controlling the well without further incident. They had a playbook that identified the risk and understood it. They had equipment suitable for that risk — a BOP, likely managed pressure drilling. Their discipline paid off.

But that's not what I respect most. What I respect most is that they told the truth. FERVO took a kick on their highest-profile asset, weeks after their IPO, with the entire energy world watching — and they were transparent about it. To their people: may God bless you and keep you, and make His face shine upon you. Stay safe. Keep holding the line.


I single out this transparency because in my corner of this industry, it is the exception, not the rule. Geoexchange drillers take influx too. I've seen the closed-loop bores bubbling uncured grout to surface — gas flowing, uncontrolled, while the hole tried to heal itself and couldn't. It happens. Most of these are simple "swamp gas" incidents and die out on their own. But we are drilling well past historical water-well limits. The tribal knowledge that has kept drillers safe no longer applies.

Sadly, there is no mechanism for water well drillers to be as transparent as FERVO. There is no duty to disclose influx. There is no reliable public record of uncontrolled influx in geoexchange anywhere in this country. And every incentive in the system points toward keeping it that way.

So let me say plainly what the records won't. We are drilling geoexchange borefields — dozens to hundreds of holes per project, tens of thousands per institution — into rock that can, and does, contain gas and overpressured brines. These bores are increasingly run to 1,000 ft or deeper. In my neck of the woods, that completely traverses the Antrim Shale — a formation that has produced roughly 3.4 trillion cubic feet of natural gas from more than 11,000 wells, underlying the most populous parts of Michigan. The Utica and Marcellus are exposed at shallower depths in parts of New York and are the crown jewel of shale gas production in the US.

Put a drilling rig over these zones in an oilfield and nobody blinks at well control. Put thousands of holes into it under a city, and we call it HVAC. The difference is perception, but the earth doesn't care. Pressure is pressure, flow is flow, risk is risk. For FERVO, risk-based measures meant a BOP, maybe MPD. For shallow geo, the same principle must apply — scaled to the hazard, not waved off because the bore is shallow or the snake hasn't bitten yet. The floor is the ability to manage mud weight. That is the bare minimum — no exceptions. A diverter on top of that is a good idea; it buys a buffer until well-control specialists can arrive. None of this breaks the bank. And yet right now, on these jobs, we struggle to find a driller who can manage mud weight at all — never mind source a diverter.


Let's be frank about what "managing the risk" actually looks like on a geoexchange rig today, when the crew has no weighting material, no mud balance, and no diverter, and the flow turns to bubbles. You run. You get clear, you observe from a distance, and you pray. If you have enough time, you shut your trucks down on the way out. If you're lucky, there's a windsock, four-gas monitors, and an alarm protocol so the people on site know which way to move. That's the plan. Run, watch, and hope the wind is kind. Except on a geoexchange site, the other side of the fence isn't open desert. It's traffic. It's an apartment block. It's a hospital entrance. It's a school. Often only feet away.

We did all of it — the windsock, the gas monitors, the alerting protocol — in Ann Arbor. On our own. Because it was the right thing to do. It was not required by the customer. It was not required by OSHA, the state, or the county. The protection existed only because someone chose it. That is the part I can't make peace with.


So this is my appeal to my fellow geoexchange drillers — people I love and respect, who do hard, honest work: take well control seriously. Match your equipment to your risk. This was never about breaking the bank. It's about being good stewards — of your crew, of the public, of the trust people extend to you when they let you put a hole in the ground next to their kids' school.

FERVO just showed us what good stewardship looks like under pressure. They were ready, they were honest, and everyone went home. Don't wait for the lessons to be written in blood. Learn from FERVO. Do the right thing.
